To all those affected by the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake,

I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life caused by the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake, which struck on July 28, 2026. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and my sincere sympathies to everyone affected by this disaster.

I pray for the safety of all those impacted, for the swift recovery of those who have been injured, and for the rapid restoration and rebuilding of the affected communities.

At Waseda University, many of our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and other members of the University community have ties to the Kumamoto region. We earnestly hope that all are safe, and we will continue working closely with the relevant offices across the University to provide every possible form of support.

Waseda University is committed to ensuring that students affected by the disaster can continue their studies with peace of mind. We will provide the necessary academic accommodations, along with financial assistance through measures such as tuition reductions or exemptions and scholarship programs.

We will also offer support for prospective students affected by the disaster, including exemptions from application and enrollment fees.

Although the University concluded its Spring Semester on July 29, we will carefully consider appropriate measures for students affected by the disaster with regard to upcoming academic activities, including rescheduled and makeup examinations for Spring Semester courses as well as summer intensive courses, so that they may participate without worry. Above all, we ask that you prioritize your own safety and the safety of your family.

The University will not be sending a general safety confirmation email to students in the affected areas. This decision reflects our belief that those affected should first focus on ensuring their own safety, the safety of their families, evacuation, and rebuilding their daily lives.

If you have any concerns or require assistance regarding your studies or student life, please do not hesitate to contact your undergraduate or graduate school.

The affected areas continue to face an uncertain situation due to aftershocks and the risk of secondary disasters. We sincerely hope that all members of the Waseda community, including our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and their families, will overcome these difficult circumstances and be able to return to safe and peaceful daily lives as soon as possible.
