The International Office at Waseda University and EUIJ Waseda invited Belgian Trade Ambassador Liliane Bloem to deliver a special lecture at our university, entitled “The EU & International Trade: How the European Union faces current challenges”. This event attracted an audience of around 50, including Waseda students and the general public. Professor Min Shu, School of International Liberal Studies, has been instrumental in the organization of this event.
Professor Norimasa Morita, Vice-President for International Affairs of Waseda University, opened the event by expressing his gratitude to Ambassador Bloem and the Belgian Embassy in Tokyo for co-organizing this event. He also stressed that Waseda has very good relationships with Belgian universities such as ULB, and that this collaborative event would hopefully contribute to the consolidation of these ties.
Ambassador of the Belgian Embassy in Japan Gunther Sleeuwagen joined Professor Morita to congratulate the organization of this successful event, and expressed his determination to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Belgium and Japan even further towards the year 2016, in which the two countries will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic and friendship relations in 1866.
Then, Ambassador Liliane Bloem provided an insightful, up-to-date guide to EU Trade Policy from a practitioner’s perspective. In the Q & A session, Mrs. Bloem interacted with the audience, especially young people, and this lecture provided the participants with a rare opportunity to exchange views with a senior European policymaker on a face-to-face basis.
