A Comprehensive Study of Buddhist Terminology across India, Tibet, and China: Toward the Construction of a Glossary and Digital Tools Based on the Abhidharmakośa and Its Commentaries
With the rapid advancement of digital environments and AI technologies, a vast number of classical texts is being digitized worldwide and made available online. In the fields of Indology and Buddhist Studies, this situation presents an urgent need not only for the collation and translation of previously unedited texts, but also for text processing and the creation of digital tools alongside advances in digital humanities. In this context, the present research aims to achieve the following objectives: (1) to compile a glossary of Buddhist terminology based on the critical edition and translation of Vasubandhu’s Abhidharmakośa (4th–5th century) and its commentaries, and (2) to construct a database and digital tools to manage this glossary, making use of existing reference works. Through this series of initiatives, the present research will promote broad information sharing across related fields and contribute to advancing Abhidharma studies, establishing a foundation for an international research framework.
