Overview of research

In Japan, the study of history came into existence and became an academic discipline during the Meiji period, modeled on European history studies, particularly the study of history in Germany. In this process, the classifications of European history were followed, and Japanese and Chinese histories too were divided into ancient times, middle ages, early modern period, late modern period, and the contemporary period. Accordingly, historical phenomena, such as the feudal system, regal power, rank in society, cities, law, and religion, have been explained based on the concept of European history. The limits of modeling and applying such historical theories created in Europe are now beginning to be felt distinctively in the disciplines of Japanese history, East Asian history, and Islamic history. Even within the study of European history itself, analyses are emerging one after another which are conducted from angles entirely different from previous analytical perspectives. Against this backdrop, this research, by comparing different regions, will shed light on the effectiveness of the history analysis philosophy that was developed in Europe inclusive of such genres as the history of religion, history of thought, and history of art, and we will aim to present a new image of world history and civilization history from Waseda to the world.
