REMUNERATION
Q:How much is the remuneration for Visiting Researchers?
A:The amount-ranging from 390,000 or 470,000 JPY—will be determined by Waseda Institute for Advanced Study (WIAS) at the time of recruitment, considering the researcher’s academic career and achievements. (As of April 2026)
Q:I won’t be able to stay for the full 31 days. Can I receive my remuneration on a pro-rata basis?
A:No. The remuneration is paid for a 31-day appointment; therefore, you are required to stay at Waseda University for the full 31-day duration.
TRAVEL EXPENSES
Q:Are travel expenses, such as airfare, provided?
A:Travel expenses are not provided. In some cases, you may be eligible to apply for the subsidy through Waseda University’s International Affairs Office. For details, please consult the faculty member at Waseda University who is recommending you.
ACCOMMODATION (Guest House)
Q:I would like to continue my joint research with my host faculty member at Waseda University even after my research period as a Visiting Researcher has ended. Is it possible to extend my stay at the guest house?
A:We do not allow early check-in or late check-out. If your research requires an adjusted schedule, please let us know. Please be aware that you will be responsible for any additional lodging expenses.
Q:We are planning to visit Japan as a family and would like to book a family room.
A:We only provide up to a twin room. As long as rooms are available, we can accommodate reservations for a family room. However, you will be responsible for covering the difference in price compared to a twin room.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Q:Please let me know if I am eligible to apply in my current position.
A:In principle, this program targets researchers who hold a tenured position. Please review the application guidelines and decide for yourself. Applicants should preferably have no prior employment relationship with Waseda University, and while those who have previously stayed as a Visiting Researcher or Visiting Scholar at this Institute are ineligible to reapply, prior stays or visits without an employment contract do not affect eligibility.
APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
Q:Do application documents need to be submitted in Japanese?
A:They may be submitted in English or in Japanese.
Q:I have many achievements that need to be listed. Do I have to include them all?
A:If you have a long list of achievements that is difficult to fit in its entirety, please limit your list to about 20 selected items.
Q:How should I write Research Plan?
A:Please consult with your host faculty member.
Q:Can a recommender submit a letter of recommendation directly?
A:Yes. The letter can be uploaded via the application form or sent by the recommender to the WIAS office at: [email protected]. Please note that in the case a recommender sends it to us directly, applicants cannot complete their application unless they upload a dummy file as a recommendation letter.
OTHERS
Q:Can I contact you by phone or via online meeting?
A:No. Please contact us via the online inquiry form on the WIAS website. Please note that we may not be able to respond to your inquiry promptly, since at times we receive many queries.
