“Renewable energy integration in Hawaii: challenges and opportunities”
This presentation reviews the recent decarbonization policy efforts in Hawaii, United States. Hawaii was one of the first U.S. states to introduce 100% clean energy and carbon neutrality targets by 2045. The state’s energy landscape is different from those in the rest of the U.S. or Japan, but these regions share common policy challenges of efficient and equitable energy transitions. With exceptionally high penetration of solar energy in the residential sector and high reliance on imported petroleum, Hawaii’s case study serves as a “postcard from the future” that hints at the policy challenges to be faced in the rest of the U.S. and Japan. We review some of the recent policies related to decarbonization at the state and the U.S. federal levels in order to investigate how they could be improved to allow more efficient energy transition that strikes an optimal balance efficiency and equity.
