“Entrepreneurial ecosystems as fields: Changing institutional settings for start-ups in Tokyo”
This research paper is aimed to analyze entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) as organizational or institutional fields. The notion of EEs has become popular in the last years to better analyze a variety of contextual conditions that allow start-ups to thrive. We propose to substantiate the EE concept with the theory of fields put forward by neo-institutionalists and more recently enriched by strategic agency. With the help of this theoretical lens, we (1) strengthen the role of institutions without neglecting strategic agency that is already characteristic of entrepreneurial ecosystems, (2) explore how these institutions are enacted, and (3) how they are eventually co-created by the strategic actors, not least the start-ups.
Against the backdrop of our knowledge of the EE and its institutions in the German capital of Berlin, we plan to analyze the emergence of Tokyo’s EE, i.e. how venture support organizations run by domestic or foreign corporations, VCs, universities or state agencies, have been created and how provide an institutional frame for new venture creation. Tokyo is Japan’s economic center and, recently, an EE has emerged in proximity to the established corporate landscape. The potential is high that these start-ups maintain strong ties with large Japanese firms.
Our research aims to explore the enabling and constraining mechanisms for start-ups in this specific institutional setting. More specifically, we differentiate between different dimensions of institutional support with regard to source (e.g., public vs private) and target (e.g. in science-based and non-science based fields). Furthermore, we explore how different institutional settings allow for different forms of networked entrepreneurship.
