WIAS Visiting Researcher & Visiting Scholar Seminar: “Data Challenges in Empirical Political Research: Experiments, Legislative Data, and Comparative Surveys” by Marta Gallina and Stefano Camatarri (6/30)

Abstract

This presentation introduces different types of data used in empirical political research, focusing not only on their analytical potential but also on the practical and methodological challenges they raise.

In the first part, Dr. Gallina examines the implementation of a survey experiment in the French context. Drawing on an ongoing study comparing the effects of AI-generated content and journalistic articles on citizens’ knowledge about EU affairs, this section discusses treatment construction, questionnaire design, measurement choices, and fieldwork challenges.

In the second part, Dr. Camatarri turns to legislative and survey data for the comparative study of democracy and party competition. Using Japan as a case study, this section discusses how legislative data can be used to assess claims about executive dominance and long-term LDP rule. It then moves to voter-side survey measures, especially propensity-to-vote data, to examine whether and how LDP dominance has changed on the electoral side. The presentation concludes by reflecting on how these different data sources can be combined and connected to established international research projects and infrastructures, including the EES, the ESS, and the recent development of CRONOS as an ESS cross-national online survey panel.
