WIAS Visiting Researcher Seminar: “A Discussion on Derrida’s 1963 Seminars on Husserl” (6/19)
Abstract
The aim of this workshop is to analyse Jacques Derrida’s two seminars on Edmund Husserl from 1963, which were published by Seuil in 2024 (Du même à l’autre, Deux cours sur Husserl, 1963). The first seminar, devoted to Husserl’s concept of God, demonstrates how God—who is placed in brackets by the phenomenological reduction—appears as transcendental historicity within the immanence of consciousness in both unpublished manuscripts and published works of Husserl. The second seminar focuses on the Fifth Meditation contained in Husserl’s Cartesian Meditations. Drawing on the discussion raised by Eugen Fink regarding the problem of transcendental language, the problem of resemblance in the analogising apperception raised by Alfred Schütz, and the problem implied in Levinas’s critique of Husserl, Derrida devotes himself to a close reading of the Fifth Meditation from the 45th to the 50th paragraph. The discussion overlaps in part with what has been published in several of Derrida’s works, yet the bulk of the discussion is found only in this manuscript. This valuable record of how Derrida presented Husserl’s phenomenology at the Sorbonne in 1963 holds the potential to rediscover and renew perspectives on Derrida’s interpretation of Husserl.
In this workshop, researchers who have been engaged with Derrida’s reading of Husserl over many years will discuss various topics specific to these two seminar manuscripts.
