Current and future perspectives on Energy Storage

For achieving the sustainable goals required for carbon neutrality, the effective use of renewable energy resources is closely linked to energy storage technologies. The lecture of Prof. Adriano Milazzo presents an excursus of classical and innovative energy storage opportunities and his most recent work in this field, which, I believe, will stimulate an interdisciplinary discussion with researchers from different fields.

Adriano Milazzo,  Associate Professor, University of Florence – Thermo Group – Department of Industrial Engineering

Adriano Milazzo earned his Master degree and PhD from the School of Engineering at the University of Florence. He spent 11 years as a researcher at the University of L’Aquila, where he worked on internal combustion engines and energy systems. In 2006 he moved back to the University of Florence. His main research topics are: refrigeration, ejectors, energy storage, sustainability of energy systems. He teaches Thermodynamic, Heat and Mass transfer, Refrigeration. He is responsible for the joint laboratory “Polo del Freddo”, focused on sustainable refrigeration.

Abstract

Energy storage is a crucial topic in the present era of increasing penetration of renewable energy and will be even more important in the future. Several options are available: mechanical, thermomechanical, thermal, chemical or electrochemical. Each of these options has its own pros and cons. Some options are commercially available, while others are still in their infancy. For static applications, weight and volume are not fundamental aspects. Instead, efficiency and investment cost are the main drivers in the choice of an energy storage, especially when high power/high energy systems are considered.

This lecture offers a brief, not exhaustive, excursus of storage technologies. In any kind of storage, energy losses are unavoidable. Hence, storage efficiency (sometimes called “roundtrip efficiency”) will be the major concern of this talk, being investment cost highly different from country to country and hence hard to discuss on a general basis.

The discussion will start from the most ancient technologies, i.e. pumped hydro storage (PHS) and compressed air storage (CAES) and will arrive to the presently most discussed options, i.e. hydrogen. Integration between different technologies, e.g. isobaric CAES with water storage, will be discussed. Technical feasibility will be accounted for. Integration with other functions, e.g. heating and cooling, will be also examined.
