Dr. Hiroyuki (Hiro) Iseki is an Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning, as well as a Research Faculty at the National Center for Smart Growth at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research focuses on balancing efficiency, effectiveness, and equity in the provision of mobility and accessibility with special attentions to transportation, land use, environment, and the diversity of needs among different socioeconomic groups. Iseki’s past projects include the development of direct transit demand models using origin-destination trip data, the analysis of variances in perceptions of transit service quality by users’ demographic characteristics and trip characteristics, public private partnerships (PPP) in transportation financing and transit service, equity in transit finance, the determinants of public transit ridership, including gasoline prices, and the development of GIS method for bike planning. Iseki has published his work in a range of transportation, planning, and geography journals. Iseki’s current research includes the examination of transportation policy and planning on the electric vehicle (EV) adoption and the EV infrastructure supply in relation to the greenhouse gases (GHGs) reduction goals in the US and Japan.

Outline

The presentation will address challenges that surround transportation policy and planning regarding the CO2 emissions reduction in the context of climate change. Within this larger context, the presentation will discuss critical factors and questions to consider for the EV adoption and its impacts, drawing insights from two recent empirical studies. The broader research of this presentation has been supported by a grant from the Abe Fellowship Program administered by the Social Science Research Council in cooperation with and with funds provided by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.
