主 旨 / Outline
“Economic Growth, Income Equality, and the Environment: Kuznets Trilemma?”
This study investigates the interlink between the Kuznets curve (KC) hypothesis and the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis in the context of the trilemma. In particular, we examine whether a country can simultaneously obtain the three policy objectives, i.e., economic growth, income equality, and environmental quality. This study empirically identifies that all three policy goals are jointly achievable (possible trinity) in some countries but not all countries, and that the more equitable distribution of wealth, the greater the likelihood of harmonizing the three policies. Furthermore, our results suggest that trade, industrial share, and R&D may tighten or relax the tension among three policy goals depending on income groups.
