主 旨 / Outline
John Ruskin was the leading culture critic of his times, who has had a world-wide influence on art, architecture, social theory and the green movement. His key writings advocated the importance of J.M.W. Turner’s painting; explained the relationship between good architecture and the values of the society that produces it, especially in Venice; criticised the effect of mechanical production and market capitalism; and diagnosed the “death of nature”. Revered by Gandhi, Proust, and Tolstoy, this magnificent writer was the most interdisciplinary and internationally celebrated British writer of the nineteenth century whose works are achieving fresh recognition today. This is an illustrated lecture.
