主 旨 / Outline
“Effects of Foreign directors on Firm performance. Empirical research in Japan”
This research studies the effect of foreign directorship on Japanese firm performance, focusing on first-time introduction of foreign directors to boards. Using a panel data of non-financial listed Japanese firms from 2004 to 2015, we document that firms having foreign director on board are of larger size, larger foreign sales, higher foreign ownership, higher R&D investment than firms without. Announcements of first-time introduction are associated with positive abnormal returns. However, the long-term performance of the introduced firms is worse than control firms having no foreign directors on board.
