主 旨 Outline |
Japanese exports at the turn of the twentieth century changed both in volume and composition, shifting away from leading industrialized countries toward poorer Asian neighbors between 1880 and 1910. Using a new disaggregated data set of bilateral-product level exports for the universe of Japanese trade partners, we find that changes in the extensive margin account for over 30 percent of export growth over this period. At the same time, shipments of the same products to the same countries make up the balance. Determinants of market entry include trade costs and market size for initial entry, which may reveal the export capabilities to the firms populating the various industries, while subsequent entry was influenced by product-level characteristics. We also observe products starting in a small number of markets and accumulating additional ones based on earlier penetration. Exit is relatively rare but seems to be determined by market-specific demand and product-specific factors. |
