 主 旨
Outline
Corporations from OECD countries are increasing their corporate responsibility, but the institutional drivers and effectiveness of CR both remain widely contested. The study maps CR activities of corporations in OECD countries using the ASSET4 database, comparing the overall development of CR activities based on 12,556 firm-year observations between 2008 and 2014. The analysis includes both overall CR scores, but also compares sub-aspects such as community, diversity or human rights dimensions. The first set of analyses show that corporate responsibility is strongly influenced by national-level institutional factors? In particular corporate governance, product market regulation and employment relations institutions. A strong positive effect on corporate responsibility is associated with worker participation in the form of works councils, the presence of collective agreements with trade unions, and higher levels of state social spending. Beyond this, mandatory disclosure of non-financial information was shown to have a positive effect on activities related to social responsibilities. The second set of analyses show that countries with high values for Corporate Responsibility also have more firms experiencing controversies related to irresponsible actions by corporations. Finally, the study examines whether CR policies impact measurable outcomes in terms of employee-related social responsibilities. The preliminary result shows that this relation is strongly dependent on the presence of particular types of institutions.
