主 旨 / Outline

“Applications of the science of subjectivity”

While the topic of subjectivity might seem at first rather abstract, I argue that it is in fact very much linked with highly concrete and applied issues in psychology and cognitive sciences. Do demonstrate this claim, I shall focus on two questions: the first is mind-wandering and more generally the question of the dynamics of mental events. Classical cognitive science is mainly concerned with functions. It endeavors to outline the structure of the human mind. Much less attention has been devoted to the way successive mental processes unfold in time, in other words, the dynamical organization of the mind. One major exception to this neglect has been the field of mind-wandering studies, which has recently been increasingly active. “Mind-wandering” refers to the absolutely general and inescapable tendency that our mind has to escape the here and now. Whatever our current task, there are moments when we lose our focus and start to think about something that we did not intend to focus on. I argue that this phenomenon is a valuable window into the dynamics of the mind, and that it is intrinsically tied to a scientific inquiry that embraces subjectivity. I shall focus on two specific applications, the first in clinical psychopathology and the second in sports psychology: in clinical psychology I argue that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is linked to a disorganization of the stream of thought, and is thus a disorder of the dynamics of the mind. In sports psychology, I shall put forth the idea that one critical dimension of performance for endurance athletes is the management of attention in time. I shall argue that this ability is understudied and suggests new methods to study it in the laboratory and in ecological settings.
