主 旨 / Outline
幕末期の日蘭関係については、これまで主に文化交流史の視点から研究されてきた。当時のヨーロッパにおけるオランダは、領土としては小国であるものの、蘭領東インド（現インドネシア）を植民地に持ち、欧米では唯一、日本と関係を持つ国でもあった。オランダにとって日本は、世界貿易国家としてのステータスを高め、植民地の市場としても期待できる存在だったのである。オランダ植民省は積極的対日外交を行っていたが、中立主義をとっていた外務省に移管されると、それまでの特別な日蘭関係は終わりを告げる。幕末日本を取り巻く国際関係を、オランダ・イギリス・インドネシア・アメリカの史料により、新たに描く。
