The theme of this panel is the use of AI in the learning and instruction of second language (L2) writing—a topic that has rapidly become critical to the future of L2 education with the emergence of generative AI in recent years. In this session, three distinguished speakers will discuss the promises and challenges of AI as a new companion in teaching and learning L2 writing. The presentations will be followed by an extended Q&A and discussion session.

Generative AI and English Language Teaching: A Global Englishes Perspective
Generative AI (GenAI) is increasingly used in English language teaching, yet its reliance on standardized norms challenges its suitability for Global Englishes-informed pedagogy. This study, adopting a Global Englishes Language Teaching (GELT) perspective, explores how ChatGPT can be adapted through prompt engineering to generate GE-aligned ELT materials. Three models were examined: a Basic Model with single-step prompts, a Refined Model 1 using iterative strategies, and a Refined Model 2 incorporating GE-oriented corpora. Analysis of their outputs highlights both opportunities and limitations in balancing AI’s default tendencies with prompts that promote linguistic diversity. Findings underscore the importance of strategic prompt design in mitigating native-speakerist biases and enhancing contextual relevance. The discussion emphasizes teacher agency in shaping AI-generated content and integrating GenAI into multilingual pedagogical frameworks.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. James McKinley has taught in higher education in the UK, Japan, Australia, and Uganda, as well as US schools. His research targets implications of globalization for L2 writing, language education, and higher education studies, particularly the teaching-research nexus and English medium instruction. Dr. McKinley is co-author and co-editor of several books on research methods in applied linguistics. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the Journal System, and a co-Editor of the Cambridge Elements series Language Teaching (Cambridge University Press).

Beyond Traditional Feedback: Exploring AI Tools for Second Language Writing Development
This presentation examines the evolving landscape of feedback methods in second language (L2) writing instruction. The study consists of two parts: First, a comparative analysis of machine translation (MT) and teacher corrective feedback (TCF), revealing that TCF enhances complexity while MT improves accuracy and fluency. The findings suggest that a hybrid approach combining both feedback types may optimize writing development. Second, the presentation explores how university students refine their prompts when using ChatGPT to elicit writing feedback over a semester. Data show students’ evolution from seeking nativelike expressions to prioritizing clarity and structure, increasingly personifying AI as a teacher. Both studies provide valuable insights into how different AI tools can complement traditional feedback methods, highlighting the importance of strategic implementation in writing pedagogy.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Miyuki Sasaki is a professor at Waseda University’s Faculty of Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences. Her work has appeared in multiple journals, including Language Learning and Modern Language Journal. She served on the TOEFL Committee of Examiners as its first Japanese member (2007–2011) and is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Second Language Writing. Her research examines the longitudinal development of first and second language writing ability, strategy use, and comprehensibility factors in L2 texts.

How to Write Academic Papers Ethically and Effectively with AI
With the rapid advancement of AI technology, the process of writing research papers is undergoing significant change. This talk is designed for AI-savvy yet novice researchers and offers practical techniques for writing English papers using generative AI tools like ChatGPT. I will begin by outlining effective strategies for drafting and refining papers with AI. Next, I will emphasize the importance of adhering to journal guidelines when using AI-assisted writing. Finally, I will discuss how generative AI can support self-evaluation and paper improvement. The goal of this talk is to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills to write academic papers more ethically and effectively by utilizing AI technology.
Speaker Bio:
Atsushi Mizumoto, Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education, is a Professor at the Faculty of Foreign Language Studies and the Graduate School of Foreign Language Education and Research, Kansai University, Japan. His research interests include AI applications in language learning and teaching, learning strategies, language testing, and research methodology. He has published extensively in Q1 international journals and received the Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement from Language Education and Technology in 2017.
