The Eastern Question is the name that was given to the Great Powers’ visions and policies regarding the Ottoman Empire and its impending doom. The strange and unknown story of a French adventurer who managed to sell his knowledge of the Orient to France, and his Western skills to the Ottomans, to carve for himself a role in the Ottoman
establishment before turning against them in a bid for radical reforms “with, without, or despite the Turks.”

Seminar 4: The Reform edict of 1856 and the (still) burning issue of equality
Outline
An analysis of the process which brought the Tanzimat reforms to their climax with the promulgation of the Reform Edict granting full equality to all subjects of the Sultan and a broader contextualization of the notion of equality in a hierarchical and inegalitarian society whose fundamental principle was – and still is – justice/equity.
