Even beginners are welcome! Enjoy the cheerful rhythms of folk music.
"Waseda University Celtic Music Club"
Secretary-General: Hayata Nakacho, 2nd year student, School of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Waseda University Celtic Music Club (hereinafter referred to as Wasecelt) is the only student club at Waseda University that performs Celtic music. Our members range from beginners to experienced musicians, and we welcome both Waseda students and students from other universities to enjoy Celtic music together.
Celtic music is a traditional form of music rooted in the cultures of Ireland and Scotland, characterized by its clear rhythms and ornamentation. Because it has long been played as dance accompaniment, many of its songs are lively and upbeat, making you want to move. You may have heard it in the background music at Muji stores or in the music for the movie *Titanic*.
The instruments we use are diverse, including wind instruments such as tin whistles and Irish flutes, string instruments such as violins (fiddles in Celtic music), mandolins, and acoustic guitars, as well as bellows instruments like accordions and percussion instruments. Some instruments are available for loan or trial within student club.
In addition, Wasecelt's activities include a time called "song introduction" each time, where volunteer members from the leadership grade introduce a new song to the other members. A unique feature is that the songs are taught using musical scale names (Do-Re-Mi), so even those who cannot read sheet music can participate in the performance. Furthermore, jam sessions are held during the activities. When someone starts playing, other members naturally join in, and sounds are layered one after another. The moment when others join in on your playing or when your playing perfectly matches that of others is especially enjoyable.

Currently, we hold live performances four times a year, both on and off campus. For each performance, we form a band with a specific theme and perform on stage. While our regular sessions are mainly improvisational, for live performances, the members work together to create arrangements, paying close attention to the song order and structure. One of the unique appeals of live performances is the opportunity to try modern songs and bold arrangements that are difficult to do in regular sessions.

The reason I joined Wasecelt was because I wanted to enjoy music I had never encountered before. I think the appeal of Celtic music lies in its wide range of atmospheres, from bright and peaceful tunes to cool and fast-paced songs. If you want to discover new music you've never heard before, Wasecelt is perfect for you. No prior musical experience is necessary. Our members will carefully teach you playing techniques, so if you have even the slightest interest, please come and check out our activities!
