Dear Incoming Students, Congratulations on your entrance to Waseda, and welcome! You might not have been able to fully enjoy your student life in high school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but I hope that you will completely immerse yourself in your student life at Waseda.
At the same time, you should be conscious of your responsibility for your behavior as a member of the Waseda University community. One of our important traditions is that each student has a place where they belong at Waseda. We have students who have devoted themselves to academic research, athletic activities, drama and theater, music, or writing novels. They are all equal and respect each other, no matter which country or region they are from, or regardless of what kind of family background they have. All the students enjoy their freedom and student life and do not look down on any other students. Therefore, I trust that you will conduct yourself well as a Waseda student.
Waseda University is at present striving to become a university that shines on the global stage, making efforts to acquire a solid reputation from the world in terms of academic research, quality of education, and fostering an attitude of flexible sensitivity to others. I hope that you incoming students will also become people who will contribute to humankind throughout the world. However, doing so does not necessarily mean working for an international organization such as the United Nations or a global corporation. At Waseda we believe that anyone who thinks about humankind throughout the world and works according to her/his ideas should be regarded as a global leader.
I hope that you will become a true global leader in that sense.
Congratulations again on your entrance to Waseda. Warm wishes,
