My Study Abroad Experience at Waseda

Mr. Nicholas Pak Hin CHIANG
(Current GLFP Student at Waseda, the University of Chicago student)

When I first stepped foot on Waseda Campus, I was filled with a sense of nervousness and excitement. My experience at Waseda and the Global Leadership Fellows Program (GLFP) thus far has been nothing short of life-changing. Being a U.S.-Waseda GLFP student means being challenged everyday to contemplate about the social environment around us. As part of the GLFP, I participate in a weekly zemi centred around the U.S.-Japan relationship through the lens of post-war Japanese literature. Furthermore, I engage weekly in a forum with fellow GLFP students that discusses social issues of global significance. Outside of GLFP courses, through my courses in SILS, I am able to interact with students from Japan and other countries. I am also a member of a painting circle that hosts exhibitions, where I have had the opportunity to meet with and paint with other Waseda students who share similar interests in art with me. Finally, the dormitory fee exemption as part of the GLFP program has relieved the burden of paying rent, which enables me to further explore what Tokyo and Japan have to offer. Being a U.S.-Waseda GLFP student in Japan has allowed me to view the world from a different perspective, experience a new culture, learn and practise a new language on a daily basis, and develop as an individual and a leader for the future.
