Associate Professor Donna Wong Assumes Advisory Role in UNESCO’s Drive for Improved Sport Governance and Social Impact

Waseda University is proud to announce that Associate Professor Donna Wong from the Graduate School of Sport Sciences is appointed a key member of the first and only Advisory Committee of the UNESCO Chair on Governance and Social Responsibility in Sport.

The UNESCO Chairs program was initiated to encourage advancement in research, training and program development in higher education through inter-university cooperation by building university networks that facilitate transfer of knowledge across borders. The first UNESCO Chair on Governance and Social Responsibility in Sport was officially launched on June 12, 2023 in Qatar’s Education City Minaretein Building by partners Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and University of Central Lancashire Cyprus. The partnership shares a commitment to raise governance practices and social responsibility activities within the global sports community.

The UNESCO Chair is committed to research, education, outreach, stakeholder engagement, and concrete policy outcomes in the areas of sport governance and social responsibility. This is demonstrated by its focus on five interconnected pillars, which include the recently introduced ‘Policy and Impact’ that includes esports as well. The Advisory Committee acts as the consultative authority for the UNESCO Chair. The committee is tasked with setting directions for research activities, providing advice and recommendations, contributing to the development of best practices, and enhancing the Chair’s influence in global networks.

As an academic passionate about research in the sporting realm, especially esports, Dr. Wong has been invited to play a pivotal role in the Advisory Committee, specifically co-coordinating the Esports pillar. Dr. Wong brings in knowledge gained through her experience and years of research at Waseda University to the Committee to further strengthen the governance of the sports community. This prestigious committee is comprised of a diverse number of internationally renowned academics as well as consultants, and practitioners dedicated to advancing research, education, and training in the field of governance and social responsibility in sports. The Committee includes twelve members from around the world, each contributing to the Chair’s overarching objectives.

Waseda University is excited about Dr. Wong’s appointment. We are confident that she can contribute meaningfully to the Advisory Committee and improve the governance and social responsibility in the field of sports.
