From March 6 to 8, 2019, the Health and Sport Science Unit of Waseda University organized the International Symposium “KUL-Waseda International Workshop,” inviting the dean and its delegation of faculty members from one of our partner institutions, Faculty of Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences, Katholic Leuven University (KUL) in Belgium.
The symposium was held for three days, consisting of presentations for up-to-date research topics by KUL and Waseda faculties, graduate students’ poster sessions, and laboratory exercises

In the first half of the session, 33 of graduate students from both universities made a presentation and competed for the outstanding performance award.

Towards the end of the session, all the participants have practiced group work by 5 to 7 student group in a form of virtual research collaboration.
Day 3
Laboratory Exercises
Participants explored further research possibilities and deepened discussions for future academic collaboration throughout visiting facilities and laboratories at Tokorozawa Campus by research group.
Closing session
Besides closing remarks from Professor Muto, Mr. Jeroen Vergeylen, Minister-Counsellor in charge of Cultural & Academic Affairs, Embassy of Belgium to Japan, paid a visit to Tokorozawa Campus for this session and delivered a speech for a prospective development of academic collaboration.

To wrap up the symposium, 7 graduate students won the outstanding performance award for the Student’s Poster Session. Ms. Julie Vanderlinden, Ph.D. course, Physical Activity, Sports & Health Research Group, KUL, won the outstanding performance award.

Not only was research interaction enhanced reciprocally by topics, but cross discussion was also made in different research fields and multi-layered academic collaboration was materialized by means of the international symposium. Both universities ensured the mutual benefit on how future research outcome should be developed and accomplished.
