To realize a sustainable society, it is essential to harmonize the economy, environment, and society, and to decouple the wellbeing and economic growth of humankind from resource consumption and environmental impact. For example, it has been estimated that the introduction of resource recycling systems, as typified by the circular economy approach, will make a major contribution towards carbon neutrality. Meanwhile, there are concerns, based on quantitative evaluations, that the introduction of various innovative technologies to promote carbon neutrality may lead to an imbalance between supply and demand of some resources and supply shortages, which also makes it more important to have appropriate resource recycling systems, from the viewpoint of efficient resource use. We will, therefore, work on the development of life cycle simulation in partnership with other research institutes in SEES, from the perspective of evaluating and optimizing entire product life cycles, from resource development to material refining, product manufacturing, usage, and disposal. We will also engage in multifaceted development of technologies and processes to separate out the dissimilar material components that make up products by introducing highly novel technologies, so as to realize energy-saving resource recycling. Thus, we will investigate optimal production processes and resource recycling methods to achieve enhanced resource efficiency and environmental impact reductions, such as carbon neutrality, through a multifaceted approach to resource recycling with close coordination of both technologies and systems.
