Professor Aiji Tanaka elected President of the International Political Science Association

Prof. Aiji Tanaka

Waseda’s Aiji Tanaka (Senior Executive Director for Academic Affairs and Professor of political economy) was elected president of the International Political Science Association on July 22. He took office on July 24 for a term of two years.

IPSA, established in Paris in 1949 under the auspices of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) , is the largest and most authoritative international academic society for political science. It is supported by 54 national associations, institutional members representing over 100 organizations, and more than 3800 individual members around the world.

IPSA’s mission is to promote the study of political science and build a network of scholars in every region of the world. By supporting collaboration between researchers in emerging and established democracies, IPSA also fosters academic freedom, an essential condition for the advancement of social science.

Comment by Professor Tanaka

At the 2009 World Congress in Santiago, Chile, I was elected to the IPSA Council, and have served as First Vice President since 2012. At the Congress in Montreal this year, I was elected by the Council as President, and took office at the closing ceremony.

Following former UN University Vice Rector Kinhide Mushakoji, I am the second Japanese to serve as IPSA President. My mission will be to expand the Association, which has been supported by members from Europe and North America, and its activities to a wider global scope, engaging more scholars from Asia, Oceania, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. I am committed to give my best effort over the two-year term as President.
