Abstract:
During the course of the twentieth century, imprisonment was increasingly adopted by governments in the Middle East as a standard instrument to deal with political opposition. Often, though not only, formalised under colonial administrations this phenomenon reflected both the increasing adoption of imprisonment as a judicial punishment in penal systems but also in response to emerging mass political movements. Its practice continues to be a widespread feature of contemporary Middle Eastern political life. In this presentation I will discuss the historical development of political imprisonment as a specific state technology that has come to define state repression and the practice of opposition.
