Images of light and illumination are common to Sufi theology, nighttime religious devotions, and the social life of the religious nobility in Cairo in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. As the most prominent lineage of scholars and Sufis in Ottoman Cairo, the Bakri Lords combined a luxurious lifestyle with a commitment to spiritual leadership to create a distinct form of sociability that illuminated Cairo and beyond.
