The Qatar Chair at Waseda University and the Middle East Council on Global Affairs organized a two-day workshop titled “Asia in GCC, A new strategic partner?” held on February 27th and 28th, 2023, at Waseda University, Okuma Kaikan, Rooms N201 and N202.
The workshop gathered 20 scholars and researchers from various universities and research entities to discuss the Asia-GCC economics, energy, security, and cooperation. The workshop was divided into six sessions, and the papers presented covered a range of topics including the transition towards post-oil economies, Asia-GCC economic and financial cooperation, country case studies, re-mapping security architecture, exploring avenues of cooperation, and navigating rivalries.
the second day of the workshop featured a book discussion titled “Asian Perspectives of Gulf Security,” which is edited by Li Chen Sim and Jonathan Fulton and published by Routledge in 2023. The discussion focused on the various perspectives presented in the book regarding the Gulf security from an Asian point of view.
The book highlights the diverse viewpoints of Asian countries on Gulf security issues and provides insights into the strategic partnership between Asia and the GCC in the realm of security. The book discussion provided an excellent opportunity for participants to gain further insights into the complex dynamics of Gulf security from an Asian perspective and discuss the implications of these perspectives for the Asia-GCC partnership. The discussion was engaging and thought-provoking, and it added significant value to the overall workshop program.
The workshop provided an excellent opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and engage in discussions, which led to a better understanding of the potential strategic partnership between Asia and the GCC.
