Global Leadership Fellows Program
It has been 130 years since Waseda University’s founder, Shigenobu Okuma, articulated the founding ideal of “harmonizing Eastern and Western civilizations.” The Asian region – once labeled the “East” – has since achieved remarkable transformation, and its ties with the “West,” including the United States, have grown ever more interconnected. As the interdependence deepens, the pursuit of “East–West harmony” continues to evolve, and the Asia-Pacific region now stands at the center of global attention as a key driver of worldwide political and economic developments.
At the same time, contemporary international society is defined by diversity. People of different cultural, religious, and social backgrounds live and work together across borders. More than ever, we need individuals who can respect differing values and enact the ability to build pathways to coexistence through dialogue and collaboration.
The Global Leadership Fellows Program seeks to cultivate leaders who begin with a deep understanding of the Asia-Pacific region and a commitment to its sustainable development, and who can simultaneously connect diverse communities across regions to address global challenges with a sense of responsibility toward the global common good.
The program aims to nurture the next generation of global leaders who embody the following qualities:
Believing that individuals possessing these capacities will serve as leaders who foster harmony and innovation in an ever-changing world, we are dedicated to supporting their development.
