Waseda has received the Kurumin certification for its childcare support policies

The University has been awarded the Kurumin certification in January 2022 for its childcare support policies.

The Kurumin certification is awarded by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to enterprises who set and reach goals under their General Business Owner Action Plans, specifically towards the advancement of measures to support raising children of the next generation.

In 2007, the University announced its Waseda University Gender Equality Declaration, stating the creation of a gender-equal society as one of the most important tasks for the 21st century. In 2017, the announced Waseda University Promotion of Diversity Declaration strives to create an environment for all members of the University to have their dignity and their diverse values and lifestyles respected.

The University has spent over a decade expanding its support systems and improving the work environment for all faculty and staff, including increasing resources to promote balance between work, education, research activities, and childcare.
Based on the University’s General Business Owner Action Plans, the successful initiatives and policies implemented over the last three years (April 2018 – March 2021) were evaluated by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and Waseda was awarded its first Kurumin certification in January of this year.

The University plans to continue pushing forward with new measures to ensure essential child-rearing assistance and the promotion of a healthy work-life balance for all faculty and staff.
