Research Summary
Institute for the Study of Language and Information was founded in 2011, and the research has been conducted for three 5-year terms. The institute aims to uncover the fundamental aspects of language and communication in cognitive science, theoretical linguistics and information science, and to apply them to the development of language technology including muti-modal corpus for language learning. Since the second term, the institute also accelerated research by expanding its domain to socio-cultural aspects of language, cognitive neuroscience of language, meaning and interpretation of language use and philosophy of language. In the fourth term, the institute will enhance research on psycholinguistic and computational natural language processing, so that it can deepen the insight into the relation between Artificial Intelligence and language and information. All the research areas are integrated into the study of language and information and share the fundamental principles the institution has been maintaining from its beginning.
