Overview
In this research project, we engage in a multifaceted examination of the formation of “social sciences” in modern Europe from the viewpoints of philosophy, history, and intellectual history.
In general, “social sciences” is understood as the collective term for the systemic recognition of various studies that analyzed and evaluated social phenomena using the scientific method. With this understanding, the origins of social sciences can be traced to 19th century Auguste Comte’s Positivism which was preceded by 18th century Marquis de Condorcet’s application of mathematical methods to the social sciences and Adam Smith’s Economics.
However, if we broaden our horizons to include the philosophical reflections and the formational history of the “scientific method,” and investigate the roots and principles of the social sciences, it is possible to trace its origins to modern thought from the 15th – 16th century. We will be examining the formation of “Social Sciences” in the latter, broader sense.
