Waseda University IPS-Kitakyushu Consortium
Background of Establishment
Waseda University Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems (IPS) has been strongly promoting industry-academia collaboration and globalization with the theme of the fusion of manufacturing and electronic information technology. Meanwhile, Kitakyushu has a culture of manufacturing that has been passed down for generations, and many living teaching materials can be found in the area when thinking about future industries that are also environmentally friendly. The industrial transformation represented by the term Industrie 4.0 is now sweeping over Japan as a global wave, and Japan's manufacturing culture, which has been steadily cultivated since the past, is also being forced to respond to this. It is very meaningful to establish a collaborative system in Kitakyushu to explore the direction of industry from the perspective of industry-academia collaboration and globalization. In terms of education and research, Kitakyushu has ample potential to implement highly practical human resource development education, as well as education and research activities integrated with the region and industry.
In light of the above, we have established the consortium in order to make a significant contribution in many ways to the future development of Japan and other Asian countries.
Overview
- It is not just a 1:1 relationship between IPS and each company, but a true consortium in which companies are also connected with each other.
- In addition to regular joint research and commissioned research, we will create a system in which several collaborative research and development projects are always being carried out within the consortium.
- Participating members will be able to take on the role of professor in industry-academia collaborations and own research space. This allows students to learn practical skills while companies can get to know them better. This will have a positive impact on job hunting, encouraging students to find employment at local companies.
- We will actively share information within the consortium and disseminate it to the outside world, and serve as a driving force for Kitakyushu to become an innovative manufacturing hub.
- It will be the core of Waseda University's planned and implemented educational and research activities in cooperation with the local community and industry.
Effect
- Clarifying the university research contact point and improving coordination among participating members.
- Implementation of industry-academia collaboration courses and entrepreneur education, mainly by industry-academia collaboration faculty. It will also be possible to realize social collaboration courses involving local governments. Implementation of flexible and new education.
- Achieving deeper mutual understanding between students and industry.
- For companies, this is an opportunity to leverage the strengths and resources of the university to discover new development methods.
- Raising awareness through the consortium (creating and sharing information within and outside the consortium, especially regarding innovative manufacturing).
- Creating a centripetal force that encourages students to move from regional city to Tokyo for education and then back again to regional city for employment.
