解説/Abstract
Can fear of an invisible threat affect the next generation? The 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident offers a rare opportunity to study this question. Radiation exposure was geographically limited, but fear of radiation spread across Japan. Using nationwide birth records linked with census data, the study examines preterm birth and birth weight in three ways: comparing pregnancies exposed to the accident in utero with pregnancies that ended before the accident, comparing siblings born to the same mother, one exposed during pregnancy and the other not, and comparing regions with different levels of radiation anxiety measured through Google Trends searches. To better separate psychological stress from direct physical and economic effects, the analysis excludes areas heavily affected by the tsunami or radiation exposure. The results show that exposure to the accident during pregnancy was associated with an approximately 17% increase in preterm births and a reduction in birth weight of 22–26 grams. Radiation anxiety was estimated to account for about 72–79% of the increase in preterm births and 28–37% of the reduction in average birth weight. Effects were stronger during the first trimester and among mothers with lower education or income. The findings suggest that psychological stress from invisible threats can affect fetal development even beyond areas of direct physical damage.
