Title: On Restoring the Reading Art to a Literate Society
Date: 17:00 on 4 October
Room: Building 7, 1st Floor, Faculty Lounge Meeting Room
Abstract:
My presentation is intended to encourage my fellow teachers to instruct their students to learn to read for knowledge because I have found, to my distress, that I am not a good reader and neither are my students, but that through the methods of Mortimer Adler, How to Read a Book, we can all become better readers. His method is old fashion but effective in not only teaching students how to read but also improving their ability to write. His method involves three steps: listening, analysis; questioning, synthesis; and answering, criticism; and four rules governing each of the steps, which I will briefly summarize in my presentation. Your input—questions and insights—throughout the presentation will be greatly appreciated.
I am trying to complete my writing textbook, from which the materials I will be sharing at the presentation will be featured. It is a rather philosophical approach to prose—using the ideas of Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, and others.
