Title: German doch in discourse: syntax, prosody, information structure and interactional role
(講演言語:英語)
Abstract:
The present talk aims at extending earlier accounts of the German particle doch (see, among others, Meibauer 1994: 104-131, Thurmair 1989: 110-119, Pittner 2007) by specifying its sequential environments and the types of contexts in which it typically occurs in discourse. To do so, occurrences of doch in everyday spontaneous conversation are analyzed with respect to their syntactic position, prosodic integration/disintegration, their accentuation, and the kind of conversational activity carried out by the speaker(s). The analysis allows to detect recurring “chunks” containing the particle doch. These can be described as form-meaning pairs characterized by specific syntactic, prosodic and information structural features which speakers can use as resources to contextualize (see Gumperz 1984; Auer 1992) specific conversational activities. The data provide evidence that doch not only contextualizes – as expected – disaffiliation with prior talk, but that speakers use doch-constructions in sequences in which they display affiliation by making and evaluating arrangements, informing the co-participant(s) or by jointly reconstructing common memories of past events.
