早稲田大学大学院経済学研究科修士課程を修了,1997年ニューヨーク市立大学経済学研究科博士課程修了.Ph.D.(Economics)取得.スタンフォード大学,全米経済研究所(NBER:National Bureau of Economic Research)研究員を経て,2000年に帰国.帰国後,東洋英和女学院大学,国立社会保障・人口問題研究所を経て,2012年より早稲田大学政治経済学術院教授.2017年より早稲田大学・ソーシャル&ヒューマン・キャピタル研究所(WISH)所長.現在,厚生労働省「社会保障審議会(介護保険部会)」部会長代理,厚生労働省保健局「厚生科学審議会・ワクチン分科会・研究開発生産・流通部会」・委員などを務める.2021年には,医療・介護制作に資する科学的根拠の創出へ向けた実証研究で,文部科学大臣表彰(科学技術賞・研究部門)を受賞,2020年から日本学術会議・会員.
Graduated from the Master’s Program in the Graduate School of Economics at Waseda University. In 1997, completed the Doctoral Program in Economics at the City University of New York, and obtained a Ph.D. in Economics. After serving as a research fellow at Stanford University and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), returned to Japan in 2000. After that, worked at Toyo Eiwa University and the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, and since 2012 has been a Professor at the School of Political Science and Economics and since 2017 has been the director of the Waseda Institute for Social and Human Capital Studies (WISH) at Waseda University. Currently, holds positions such as deputy chair of the “Long -term Care Insurance Subcommittee” of the Social Security Council of the Ministry Health, Labour and Welfare, and member of the “Vaccine Subcommittee, Research and Development, and Distribution Subcommittee of the Council for Science and Technology” of the Health Science Council of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. In 2021, received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Prize (Research Category, Science and Technology Award) for empirical research to contribute to healthcare and welfare policies by creating scientific evidence. Since 2020, has been a member of the Japan Academy.
