早稲田大学政治経済学部政治学科卒業、早稲田大学政治学研究科修士課程を経て、シカゴ大学政治学部にて博士号取得。早稲田大学助手、専任講師、助教授を経て、現職早稲田大学教授、本属政治経済学術院。日本政治思想史、とりわけ社会理論、ナショナリズム、植民地主義、アジア主義、社会主義、アナーキズムに関心を持つ。主たる著作として、『初期社会主義の地形学』（有志舎、2016年）、『ベネディクト・アンダーソン グローバリゼーションを語る』（光文社、2007年）。
Naoyuki Umemori graduated from Waseda University (B.A.& M.A.) and The University of Chicago (Ph.D.). Umemori’s specialty is History of Modern Japanese Political Thought and his research interests include social theory, nationalism, colonialism, Asianism, socialism, and anarchism.
