◆ Workshop Date and Time

Venue: Onsite 12th Jan. Waseda Okuma Auditorium (Small Auditorium)/ Central Library
13th Jan. 38 Bldg. AV Rm.,Toyama Campus, Waseda University and Online (Zoom)

The Objective:
It is to give an opportunity to graduate students and young scholars to present their most recent research, to receive feedback from faculty and peers, and to interact both in Japanese and English, thereby fostering global communication and sowing the seeds for future directions in Japanese humanities. One of the main themes of this year’s symposium will be, broadly construed, environment and society, ranging from interactions with nature to urban spaces, media, and the material world.

◆ Eligibility:
Early career researchers related to Japanese studies who meet one of the following criteria: (1) (2) (3).
(1) Graduate students currently enrolled at Columbia University or at Waseda University (doctoral students are eligible, but master’s students are also welcome to apply).
(2) International students currently residing at Waseda University as research fellows. Students from outside Columbia University are also welcome.
(3) Students who are enrolled in or have completed the Columbia-Waseda Double Degree Program.

◆ Paper Requirements: Please develop your research topic in relationship to the overall theme of this workshop (Future Directions in Japanese Studies: Environment, Culture, and Society). Given the limitations on time and the diverse audience, the paper should concentrate on the presentation of broader ideas and the argument.

◆Language: The paper can be presented in either English or Japanese, but the abstracts will need to have both an English AND a Japanese version.

◆Time for Presentation: 15 min.

◆ Application Outline:Applicants are asked to produce an abstract by November 15 (Wed.) in both English and Japanese (250 English words, 400字 in Japanese).

*The number of presenters will be limited to approximately 12 so it may be that not all applications are accepted. Please note that three graduate student presenters will also be selected to participate in the round table on Friday the 12th.

◆Key Dates:
November 15 (Wed), 2023: Submission deadline
November 30 (Thu.), 2023:Presenter selection and confirmation.
December 31 (Sun.), 2023: The deadline for submission of completed paper for presentation (1500 words for English, 4,000字 for Japanese, either English or Japanese).
January 10 (Wed.), 2024: The deadline for submission of completed PowerPoint.
