Professor Naoki Sakai explained how the “Rest” world, including Asia, was subjectified by Western identity norms, using the concept of “civilizational transference” as a clue, through the re-meaning of “transnationality” and “stranger” in relation to internationality. Discussant Professor Eri Watanabe commented on these issues, citing examples from contemporary literature, and a lively question-and-answer session ensued, mainly among young scholars from the audience and online.
