Mini-workshop (in a classroom at the Higashi Fushimi campus)
Before the lecture, Associate Professor WONG, Donna (Faculty of Sport Sciences, Waseda University) introduced Dr. Biscaia.
The workshop, entitled ‘Publishing in Sport Management Journals’, covered the preparation of submitting articles to journals, what to consider and the differences in standards between countries and universities.
Dr. Biscaia is Associate Editor of the ‘European Sport Management Quarterly’ and is also editorial board member of several sport management journals. In addition to his own experience of submitting as a researcher, he gave detailed advice from a practical point of view from his perspective as an editor and reviewer.
The lecture was followed by a question and answer session, during which many questions were asked not only by the classroom participants but also by the online participants, and each was answered in great detail.
Please read below a report by a doctoral student who participated in this mini-workshop:
I’m a first-year Ph.D. student majoring in sport business, and I have frequently referred to Dr. Biscaia’s research. Dr. Biscaia is a prestigious researcher in the fields of sport management and sport marketing. He has many quality publications in our field, and he also serves as the associate editor of European Sport Management Quarterly. This workshop provides an invaluable opportunity for us to learn from his insights about publishing in sport management journals.During his presentation, Dr. Biscaia highlighted the importance of conducting research in sport management. He imparted comprehensive knowledge about how to structure a journal article, offering detailed examples from his own work for each section. His lecture provided clear guidance on writing well-developed research articles. He emphasized the importance of articulating the significance of the research, especially when aiming for publication in top-tier journals. Moreover, he introduced metrics of research performance and explained their role in shaping the field, which is very helpful for researchers when identifying suitable target journals.
In the Q&A session, I had the opportunity to ask him about manuscript writing. My first question was about how to handle different concepts when we decide to apply a certain concept. He advised that I should detail the reasons for choosing this concept and provide explanations about its differences and similarities with other concepts. My second question related to the required conciseness of the results section. He clarified that this section should be straightforward, presenting clear findings tied to the study’s objectives. The workshop gave me many practical guidelines on how to write each chapter for both qualitative and quantitative studies. It presented us students with a valuable opportunity to learn from and interact with Dr. Biscaia. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Biscaia for his step-by-step sharing of the process of publishing in sport management journals, complete with detailed example reviews.(Ph.D. student Yi Zhang)
