Event Report: Special Workshop “Public Value of Social Science Research”

The Center for Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy held a special workshop with Professor Arthur Lupia, University of Michigan on June 30, 2023.

Profile of Professor: Arthur Lupia

The graduate students and young researchers presented their current research and research plans, and discussed possible improvements or questions regarding the content of their reports.

Prof Lupia provided valuable comments on their presentations, including points for improvement, and answered questions. He also gave them valuable advice on how to effectively communicate the results and importance of their research to society. Furthermore, he gave them advice on how to effectively communicate the results and importance of research to society, based on his experience at NSF, and answered questions from the participants.

Here is a report from one of the participants (H. Nukui, M1):

The importance of explaining academic findings to a general audience is increasingly evident, especially in the era of misinformation and conspiracy theories. Despite this importance, I did not know much about how to present the results of research and convey messages to society effectively. The workshop by Professor Arthur Lupia,“Public Value of Social Science Research”,was the very opportunity that enabled me to develop this ability.

In this workshop, graduate students and young researchers reported on their research and research plans. Prof. Lupia provided detailed and insightful comments on these reports. Specifically, he advised how to improve the experimental design, methodological strategy, and framing of their research. I, for one, presented a recent experimental study which investigates how accepting or rejecting patronizing campaign support from political leaders affects voters’ evaluation of candidates. It was especially helpful to receive a comment from the prominent political scientist who conducted a range of experimental studies, and to learn an effective strategy for framing research and for presenting its findings to a general audience.

At the end of the workshop, Prof. Lupia provided a talk about the public values of social science research. In his talk, he argued that social science research was a distinct form of service. With its rigorous scientific method, social science contributes to understanding a range of social problems and empowering the people concerned. He, therefore, emphasized the importance of recognizing those who we are trying to communicate with, who we are trying to convey a message to, and who we care about in our research.

As a graduate student, it was a great opportunity not only to learn how to improve and present my work but also to reaffirm the importance of social science research and the reason why I pursue expertise in this field. With the experiences gained from this workshop, I hope that I can further develop my abilities to conduct better research and to present its findings to society in an effective way.
