Title: Public Value of Social Science Research
Abstract:
The results of social science research can bring useful insights to society and have a significant impact on public debate. However, writing for an academic audience and writing for a general audience are two very different endeavors. Explaining academic findings to a general audience requires training on the part of the researcher. As the Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation, Professor Lupia (Gerald R Ford Distinguished University Professor at the University of Michigan) has been responsible for explaining the public importance of social science research to Congress and society. In this workshop, graduate students and young researchers will report on their current research and research plans. Professor Lupia will not only comment on their work but also offer advice on how to effectively communicate the results and importance of their research to society.
