In April 2023, Waseda University’s Health Promotion: The Joy of Sports and Exercise Unit (Top Global University) invited Professor David Stensel from Loughborough University, School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (i.e., The School has been ranked number one in the world in the QS World University Rankings for sport-related subjects since 2017) in the UK as a Joint Appointment faculty member in 2023 (i.e., Waseda University). Professor Stensel provided 14 lectures under the module entitled “Exercise Metabolism” from 18 April to 1 May 2023 to students of Graduate School of Sport Sciences.
The course introduced the current research findings on physical activity and disease prevention, cardiovascular health, exercise and appetite, and aging. This helped students to gain a deeper understanding of current research areas and inspired them to further explore how physical activity can contribute to global health issues.
Also, Professor Stensel, who is an editor-in-chief of “The International Journal of Obesity”, one of the highest-impact international journals in the field, gave a lecture on how to write a high-impact research article by introducing classic past research articles and his past experiences. It was helpful for students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the key standards for publishing research articles, which is an important step for students’ future research careers.
In the individual research project’s presentation session, Professor Stensel not only gave advice on their research projects but also shared the essentials of how to deliver an appropriate presentation at an academic conference. This will be important for the students in the future in terms of how to disseminate their research findings in the academic community.
Professor Stensel as an experienced educator, researcher, and chief editor, provided the opportunity to gain insight into the current research direction as well as to stimulate students’ curiosity for further exploration of the sport science and health research field.
