Since Waseda Goes Global was adopted as a top-level initiative of the Top Global University Project by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in fiscal year 2014, Waseda University has worked for a decade on the three pillars of building research and education systems to solve global challenges and innovate the future, advancement of thorough globalization of education and research programs, and fundamental reform of faculty recruitment systems and university governance.  

 

Waseda Goes Global is a key driving force that accelerates the reforms of Waseda Vision 150, the university’s mid-to-long-term plan with a view towards 2032, which will mark 150 years since the university’s founding. Waseda Goes Global’s defining characteristic is the selection of seven academic fields at the university, held in high regard globally, as model units and proactively pouring concentrated investments into them to improve the university’s educational and research capacities and its global presence.  

 

In these seven model units, we have thus far built networks with international universities and other institutes and moved forward with the globalization of the entire university, such as by inviting international faculty with extensive international research accomplishments, expanding international joint research, developing international joint teaching programs, and offering a global-level education. Considering fiscal year 2023, the final year of MEXT’s support period, to be a kind of demarcation, we have planned a series of symposia to highlight the successful outcomes to date in the seven model units. We ask everyone from within and outside the university to take a look at the information on the symposia, and to be sure to participate in any you would like to learn more about. We hope that the efforts of the past decade in these seven model units will provide some assistance to you in your educational reforms and globalization promotion endeavors.
