The International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook

A special lecture featuring the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s World Economic Outlook will be held on October 14, 2022, hosted by the Center for Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy, Top Global University Project, Waseda University.

IMF economists will provide an overview of the global economic situation and shed light on wage-price spiral risks in this session.

 

Guest speakers from IMF Research Department

  • Dr. Jorge Alvarez

Jorge Alvarez is an economist in the World Economic Studies Division of the IMF’s Research Department. Previously, he worked in the Development Macroeconomics Research Division and covered Canada, Mexico and Colombia at the Western Hemisphere Department. His research primarily focuses on labor markets, capital and labor misallocation, structural transformation, and gaps in productivity and wages between sectors and firms. He was recently one of the authors of the World Economic Outlook. He holds a B.A. in economics from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University.

  • Dr. Philip Barrett

Philip Barrett is an Economist in the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund. His research, which focuses on social unrest, inflation, and fiscal policy, has been published in journals including Journal of Development Economics and World Development. He a recent author of the IMF’s World Economic Outlook and has previously worked in the Fund’s Fiscal Affairs and Middle East and Central Asia Departments, covering Afghanistan and Iran. Prior to joining the Fund, he worked at the Bank of England. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Oxford, a Masters from the London School of Economics, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
