On Wednesday, June 8, 2022, Waseda University’s Health Promotion: The Joy of Sports and Exercise Unit (Top Global University) held a mini-workshop with Associate Professor Lee, Jason Kai Wei (National University of Singapore), who is serving as a visiting faculty member.
This mini-workshop was conducted in a hybrid format on Waseda University’s Tokorozawa Campus and online (real-time). About 20 people, mostly students, participated from Tokorozawa Campus, and about 40 people, including researchers and students from other universities in Japan and overseas, participated online, for a total of about 60 people.
Before the lecture, Prof. Masashi Miyashita (Faculty of Sport Sciences, Waseda University) introduced Dr Lee, followed by his lecture.
The mini-workshop entitled “Human Health and Performance in a Warming World – Sports Science for Public Health” was split into two segments. The first half introduced a number of issues from Dr. Lee’s experience in a working group on climate change on the impact of hot environments on health.
In the second half, about an hour long, Dr. Lee spoke from the perspective of sports science. This included discussion on physiological changes caused by exercise under various environmental conditions, such as the need to critically consider the results of previous studies using the standards set out in the guidelines as examples (especially regarding beverage intake as a countermeasure against the hot environment.)
The lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which Dr. Lee answered questions from both classroom and online participants, and participants exchanged opinions.
We asked two student participants for their thoughts on the workshop:
・Eiji Pereira, 2nd year student in the Master’s Program (English-based Graduate Program), Graduate School of Sport Sciences, Waseda University
“First of all, I felt Dr. Lee has a lot of knowledge in the area of thermoregulation. The workshop was really practical and evidence based. Moreover, he is a very kind and outgoing person. I really enjoyed the workshop and spending time with him.”
・Yoshie Yoshikawa, 2nd year student in the Master’s program, Graduate School of Sport Sciences, Waseda University
“In this workshop, I learned a lot about the physiological responses in humans when practicing exercise and sports in a hot environment and the highly viable coping strategies for them.”
As a visiting faculty member, Dr. Lee conducted a face-to-face and online (real-time) hybrid lecture “Optimising Human Potential in a Warming World (15 times in total)” from May 20 to June 3, 2022.
