Waseda University’s Health Promotion: The Joy of Sports and Exercise Unit (Top Global University) has welcomed Professor David Stensel from Loughborough University, UK, as a Joint Appointment (JA) faculty member in 2022. His course “Exercise Metabolism” was taught in a hybrid face-to-face and online (real-time) format over 15 sessions from April 15 to 27, 2022, as an intensive course of the Graduate School of Sport Sciences.
The lectures covered a wide range of topics from classical theory to the latest research findings from the perspective of physical activity (daily behavior and exercise) and non-communicable diseases, aging and appetite, in order to prepare researchers to solve contemporary global health problems.
Professor Stensel, who is also editor-in-chief of the ”International Journal of Obesity”, one of the highest-impact international journals in the field, also gave a lecture on how to write high-impact academic papers based on his past experience.
In the sessions where student presentations were given, Professor Stencel’s positive and constructive comments on each presentation helped the students to develop their logical and critical thinking skills, which will be invaluable for their future research planning and presentation skills.
Loughborough University has been ranked number one in the world for six consecutive years in sports-related disciplines in the World University Rankings by QS, and Professor Stensel is the Dean for Research at the university. For the students of Waseda’s Graduate School of Sport Sciences, it was a very valuable experience to be able to attend such a course of a world-class standard of education.
